Our Company History


Prior to 1976 school wear was retailed through major department stores and retail chains.Cowan & Lewis was established in

1976 and retailed school wear for GPS and CAS schools in Bathurst street Sydney.


Peapes& Co. Ltd, tailors and shirtmakers, in George Street, Sydney, a listed public company specialised in providing clothing to

country clients and school wear to boarders at private schools sold its freehold premises In George Street and as a result of the

liquidation of its assets Mr John Cowan the head of the school wear department acquired the fixtures and fittings and commenced

business in Bathurst Street with Mr Andrew Rudas.


In 1976 Mr Herbert Lewis acquired the interest of Mr A Rudas and the business changed its name to Cowan & Lewis Pty Limited and

moved from Bathurst Street to the Pacific Highway at Turramurra.


In 1986 the Welsh family acquired the interest of Mr H Lewis and under the guidance of Andrew Welsh transformed the business into

one of the last true stand-alone business’s catering exclusively to the school communities by manufacturing retailing wholesaling,

and managing on campus uniform shops, encompassing   the design and supply of school wear and sportswear.
